How to Store Mangoes

Storage of Unripe Mangoes

  1. Storage Environment: Keep your unripe mangoes in a warm, non-air-conditioned environment. You can keep them in the box and the foam net or hay that has been provided along with the mangoes.

  2. Refrigerator: Do not keep them in the refrigerator, as that would spoil the mangoes and would not let them ripen either.

Checking if a mango is ripe

  1. Pressure: Check by applying gentle pressure to the bottom of an alphonso mango. The mango should be on the softer side (but not mushy).

  2. Colour: An Alphonso mango will have a saffron hue when it is ready to eat. There may be some green parts present, but most of the mango will be golden in colour when it is ripe.

  3. Aroma: The mango will also have a sweet scent, when it is ripe.

  4. The colour and the sweet aroma are indicators that the mango is ready to be eaten

Storage of ripe mangoes

  1. Storage Environment: Keep your ripe mangoes in a warm, non-air-conditioned environment. Do not keep them in the box, in the foam nets, or in the hay, as the mangoes would then get spoilt.

  2. Refrigerator: Do not keep them in the refrigerator, as that would spoil the mangoes.

Tips

  1. Soaking Mangoes in Water: You can put the ripe mangoes in a bowl of room temperature water, completely submerging the mangoes in the water, for 30 minutes before having them. It is said to remove excess phytic acid from the mangoes, that generates heat in the human body.

  2. Weights and Sizes: After mangoes are harvested, they get sorted according to their weight. As mangoes ripen, they lose 15 – 20% of their weight due to a loss of moisture. So, the weight of mangoes that is listed will not match the exact weight of the mangoes that you eat.
